This piece of branded content connected the heritage of Clarks to the North East Maritime Trust in South Shields, a space where historic boats are lovingly restored and maintained.
The brief was to film the product in the working environment. As a director I really wanted to hear the stories and voices of these old boys fixing up the boats. As part of the shoot I interviewed them and built a narrative around the boats and heritage.
END. asked on a Thursday whether we had time to talk about it, we spoke on the Friday, and the reference I sent back that afternoon was a Mr Porter piece called On the Road. We shot at the Trust at the end of November 2022 with a crew of three – me, Gemma Alexander and Dima – working around the volunteers who restore the boats. The last change before delivery was adding the TM to the Clarks Originals logo.
Dima Kalenda served as the DOP on the project. Ever since this shoot the word ‘Heritage’ has to be spoken in a Geordie accent.
